Svenson shot these while observing through adjacent apartment windows in Tribeca. I love the voyeuristic nature of these - though I recognize some people might have issues with it. Svenson likens himself to a “birder.” For me, these incidental gestures and throwaway moments, where people are just being themselves, are the connective tissue holding a life story together.

This series is showing at the Julie Saul Gallery through June 29, 2013.

at Ikea Waterfront Park

at Ikea Waterfront Park

nevver:

If you’ve never heard of the photographer Sid Kaplan, then you’re definitely not alone. For the most part, Sid worked as a darkroom printer for other well-known photographers such as Robert Frank.

Since he was always behind the scenes, Sid’s work never reached the critical acclaim of those he was printing photos for. The New York Times Lens blog wrote a particularly special piece on the unseen work of this darkroom master.

A Darkroom Master’s Unseen Photographs

Outdoor adventure photography is fun to look at, but it can get old fast. If you’ve seen one really gnarly skiing or climbing photo, you’ve kinda seem them all.

That’s why Ray Demski’s new project is a breath of fresh air. He hauled several studio lights with giant reflectors out to an icefall in the Avers valley in Switzerland this winter and used the battery-powered, 1200-Joules strobes to shoot ice climbing like we’ve never seen.

“I always try to do something new every time I go into a shoot,” says Demski, an adventure sports and commercial photographer based in Munich, Germany who’s shot for companies including Red Bull, BMW and Adidas.

Wow wow wow, love it.
